For several reasons. Firstly, Slipknot is now a vastly different band from the one I portrayed in the original 2001 edition. Back then, no-one could have predicted that the group would still be together 11 years later: indeed, they themselves expressed public doubts about their longevity, simply because of the potentially explosive combination of personalities involved and the gruelling nature of their music. And yet here they are, a darker, more adult version of the original template, but here nonetheless. That fact alone demands an updated biography, but add to this the nature of the journey they've undertaken -- involving tragedy, addiction and global success beyond anyone's expectations -- and the need for a new book is obvious.

On Saturday, St Patrick’s Day, I went to see Joan Baez play the second of two dates at London’s Royal Festival Hall, three-quarters of the way through a month-long UK tour. She’s 71 now, and while her cropped hair is an elegant silver, the “spun-gold tone” of her voice has given way to a burnished bronze, the lower registers deliciously warm and sonorous but her trademark upper range diminished by age and use. She’s as charismatic as ever, chatting easily with the audience and sharing snapshots from a career that dates back to 1959.

A fine crowd of publishers and authors from the performing arts compass gathered last week for a swanky breakfast at the Garrick Club in Covent Garden, and the selection of the winning entry at the fifth Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre Biography. Our hotly tipped shortlisters were Caroline and David Stafford, whose savvy biography of Lionel Bart, Fings Ain’t What They Used T’Be (Book of the Week on Radio 4 across the Christmas period) was one of a small handful of finalist titles including Look, I Made A Hat by Stephen Sondheim, A Tiger’s Wedding by Isla Blair, May I Have Your Attention, Please by James Corden and Tales From An Actor’s Life by Steven Berkoff.
